Art Among Us in Cambridge

During the summers of 2002, 2003 and 2004, I acted as the artist facilitator of the Cambridge Arts Council/Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program "Art Among Us" program, which beautified utility boxes all around the city of Cambridge. The student employees, who ranged from 16 to 18, explored the city's vast collection of public art, met public artists and conservators and designed their own images for utility boxes all over the city. The students used skills in public speaking to present their designs to a committee, and math skills to enlarge and transfer their designs to the utility boxes. They then prepped, primed and painted the boxes as a collaborative team. The program was a great success! For more information on this project, visit www.cambridgema.gov/CAC/Public/ArtAmongUs.cfm
